Justification

Tricholoma apium has been recorded in one locality in the country, in pine woodland on limestone. The number of observed individuals is minor, approximately fifty specimens, but pine forest on limestone is widely distributed in the country, wherefore the guesstimated number of individuals would be at least ten times higher. Presumably, further research ought to be conducted in natural pine forests. Hence, it is proposed for the category of Vulnerable (VU). The site in Prespa region is a tourist resort and a recreation centre, which is the reason why the species is under intense anthropogenic impact by visitors The species is on the national red lists of fungi of a range of European countries, and it has been published on IUCN’s Global Red List of Threatened Species as Vulnerable (VU).

Population

Current population trend

Stable

Description

North Macedonia: The population of Tricholoma apium in the country is negligible. In view of the fact that this fungus species was first sighted in 2006, and since then the find has not been reconfirmed, further research in autochthonous pine woodland is essential aiming at providing assessment of its population.

Habitat and Ecology

System

1 Forest
1.4 Forest – Temperate

Habitat and Ecology

Tricholoma apium is a species mycorrhizal with Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The single record from our country is from pine forest in Prespa region.

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

The site in Prespa region, where the species has been spotted, is a tourist resort and a recreation centre, which is the reason why the species is threatened by habitat loss/degradation caused by anthropogenic pressure, i.e., tourism and recreation, along with recreational activities. Forest fires, more common due to climate change, may pose another serious threat.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

The species can be protected via prevention of forest degradation and by forest conservation. This entails avoiding intensification of logging practices in forests and plantations as well as in the adjacent areas. Active prevention of forest succession and erosion is proposed. Designating key sites for protection is recommended. The species is on the national red lists of fungi of a range of European countries, and it has been published on IUCN’s Global Red List of Threatened Species as Vulnerable VU: A2d+3d+4d (https://www.iucnredlist.org/species/79515478/79515482).
