Justification

Skeletocutis odora is a very rare species, known only from one station, in old-growth fir forest in the vicinity of the ski centre in Kozuf Mt. The number of registered individuals is about 10, while the total number of mature individuals (including those that are extant but not yet recorded) is not expected to reach 100, therefore this is treated as a very small population. Old-growth fir and spruce woods are scarcely found in N. Macedonia, which is the reason why the This species grows almost exclusively in old-growth spruce dominated forests that are not present in the country. species is not anticipated to be abundant. АОО is 16 км2, and the site is in close proximity to Kozuf ski centre, where it is under strong anthropogenic impact due to tourism development.

Description

Skeletocutis odora is a very rare species found with a few fruiting bodies on only one locality. It is a rather large, resupinate polypore with thick, white, gelatinous fruitbodies with a characteristic sweetish smell. The number of registered individuals is about 10, while the total number of mature individuals (including those that are extant but not yet recorded) is not expected to reach 100, therefore this is treated as a very small population. Old-growth fir and spruce woods have been studied in depth in recent years but the species has not been sighted again.

Habitat and Ecology

System

Habitat and Ecology

Skeletocutis odora is a lignicolous saprotrophic fungus, occurring only on fallen logs (or rarely branches attached to fallen logs), mostly moderately decayed. The main substrate is Picea but it also grows on Abies alba and Pinus sylvestris, less so on other gymnosperms. It also colonises wood of angiosperm trees (Fagus sylvatica, Populus tremula and others). In N. Macedonia, the species has been observed once on old fir trunks (Abies borisii regis). This species develops almost exclusively in old-growth spruce dominated forests, which do not occur in our country. Old-growth fir and spruce woods are barely found in N. Macedonia; therefore, the species is not expected to be abundant.

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

Its natural habitat is threatened by deforestation and loss of thick fallen logs typical of old-growth forests. Direct impact upon the species has not been established but the site is in the immediate vicinity of Kozuf ski centre, where it is under strong anthropogenic impact due to development of tourism.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

Protection of old host trees is the crucial conservation action for species protection; study of the population number and range; interpretation of species status through improved understanding of the species biology and ecology; habitat conservation; study
of the trends via monitoring. In Europe, Skeletocutis odora is incorporated into the national red lists of threatened fungi in six countries (Austria, Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and the Czech Republic), and it is among the 33 species of fungi proposed for international conservation under the Bern Convention.
