Justification

To date, Boletus emileorum is only known from the Mediterranean area (France, Greece, Italy, Portugal – Madeira and Spain) (Vizzini & Ercole, 2018). In N. Macedonia, the first data related to this fungus species originate from 2019 and 2020, from two sites in different mountain ranges, in oak communities with chestnut plantations. According to the current findings, the species has a limited distribution with very small populations. Given that the species has been established only recently, and in our country chestnut plantations are present in oak associations as its habitat, a higher number of sites are anticipated, hence, a larger species population. The major threat to the species is the logging of oak trees, wherefore it is proposed for the category of Vulnerable.

Population

Current population trend

Stable

Description

In North Macedonia, the population size is minor. During field research, only a few fruit bodies have been observed. Nonetheless, since the species has been established only recently, and in our country chestnut plantations are present in oak associations as its habitat, a higher number of sites are anticipated, hence, a larger species population.

Habitat and Ecology

System

1 Forest
1.4 Forest – Temperate

Habitat and Ecology

Baorangia emileorum is a terricolous species, mycorrhizal with sweet chestnut or oak trees, fruiting in autumn. As indicated by the current data, in our country, it is known from old chestnut plantations.

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

Minor areas with old chestnut plantations, and the minute size of the population in N. Macedonia.

Habitat loss/degradation caused by logging.
Forest fires, more frequent due to climate change, may pose another major threat.
5 Biological resource use
5.3 Logging & wood harvesting
5.3.3 Unintentional effects: (subsistence/small scale) [harvest] 7 Natural system modifications
7.1 Fire & fire suppression
7.1.3 Trend Unknown/Unrecorded

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

The species can be protected via prevention of degradation of old chestnut plantations and their conservation.
This includes avoiding intensification of logging practices in adjacent areas of old chestnut plantations. Active prevention of forest succession and erosion is recommended. Designating key sites for protection is proposed.
