Justification

This distinctive and conspicuous species has only been recorded in association with Bosnian Pine (Pinus heldraichii) in undisturbed natural or semi-natural forests. It is only known from one station, on National Park Galichica. This species’ area of occupancy is very restricted (8 км2 ) and the number of individuals in the population is less than 50. The known population is very small and, with the more frequent forest fires resulting from climate change constitute a very real threat. Therefore, a significant decrease in the population of this species is not expected in the next period. The population is not connected with the populations in the neighboring country.

Population

Current population trend

Stable

Description

In N Macedonia the population size is very small. During the field trip investigation the precise data for the status of the population size of this species in the specified site was determined. The number of individuals in the population is less than 50, on area of 8 km2.

Habitat and Ecology

System

1 Forest
1.4 Forest – Temperate

Habitat and Ecology

The species grows on dead stems of young trees, twigs and branches of Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii Christ.). The fungus is likely restricted to Bosnian pine and it has never been found growing on any other pine species

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

Zeus olympius is a species with wide distribution, but its populations are very fragmented and isolated. Forest fires, more frequent as a result of climate change, may be the single largest threat.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

The location where this species develops is located within the boundaries of NP Galichica. However, caution is recommended during the maintenance of footpaths as to avoid removal of the lower branches of Bosnian pine trees which sustain the fungus. The species is part of the Global Fungal Red List Initiative, assessed as “potentially Critically Endangered” (http://iucn.ekoo.se/iucn/species_view/129118/).
