Justification

Sarcopeziza sicula is a very rare species with very fragmented and isolated populations. Part of the stations are in the urban area of the city of Skopje, which is the reason why urbanisation is a clear threat. The remaining localities are in the vicinity of the Vardar and Bregalnica rivers, where there is intensive agriculture, which is the foremost threat to the species. The number of individuals is estimated at approximately 200, and they have a very small Estimated Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 52 km2, which is entirely compliant with the proposed IUCN categorisation.

Description

In N. Macedonia, the population size is minute. During the field survey, the precise data on the status of the species population size at the specified sites was determined. It has been collected on nine localities, and the number of individuals is around 20. Owing to the frequency of the habitat where the species develops, the assumed number of specimens would be ten times the current number.

Habitat and Ecology

So far restricted to the central and eastern regions of the Mediterranean basin, appearing between January and April, solitary or in small groups, initially developing below the ground and partially surfacing at maturity, in sunny glades, in lawns, among grasses and herbs or on bare calcareous ground, with or without the presence of a tree nearby, butalso in typically Mediterranean matorral, near Cistus spp., Pinus halepensis, Olea europea and other sclerophyllous vegetation. Its occurrence in treeless environments could be indicative of a saprotrophic lifestyle. Еcological niches in Pezizomycetes have revealed to be incredibly varied, and several Pezizales are now thought to be endophytes or facultative biotrophs, able to switch from a biotrophic ecology associated with living host cells to a saprotrophic mode of nutrition. In N. Macedonia, it occurs in sandy spots along rivers and streams, and also in abandoned farming plots overgrown with herbaceous plants. It emerges in late winter and during springtime.

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

Sarcopeziza sicula is a rare species whose populations are very fragmented and isolated. Part of the stations are in the urban area of the city of Skopje; therefore, urbanisation is an apparent threat. The remaining localities are in close proximity to the Vardar and Bregalnica rivers, where there is intensive agriculture, which is the leading threat to the species.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

Research into the species biology and ecology; inclusion in the National Biodiversity Monitoring System; conservation of the species localities
