Justification

The species has been established at 4 sites with 6 finds, from mixed deciduous communities. In view of the population variability and the probability of finds from other sites in mixed deciduous forest, the species is proposed for the category of Vulnerable.

Population

Current population trend

Stable

Description

The population of the species Psilocybe serbica in the country is variable, and it is dependent on the site. Thus, for instance, the data from Sar Mt refers to few individuals only while the other sites are host to 20-30 recorded fruitbodies. The total population of this species is guesstimated to be a couple of times larger than the current one.

Habitat and Ecology

System

1 Forest
1.4 Forest – Temperate

Habitat and Ecology

The species Psilocybe serbica is variable in terms of its ecology (Borovička et al. 2011), which has also been confirmed by the data related to N. Macedonia. In our country, it has been observed in mixed forest associations, and it normally occurs on decayed and rotting debris of ligneous plants, first and foremost deciduous, and rarely coniferous.

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

The most severe threat is habitat loss or degradation as a result of logging. Most of the sites where the species has been recorded are in the immediate vicinity of tourist resorts or recreational centers. Therefore, anthropogenic pressure poses another threat. Forest fires, more common as a result of climate change, may also be a serious threat.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

The species can be protected via prevention of forest degradation and by forest conservation. This includes avoiding intensification of logging practices in forests and plantations as well as in the surrounding areas. Active prevention of forest succession and erosion is recommended. Designating key sites for protection is recommended.
