Justification

The only population of this species in the country occurs in a single locality, and its Area of Occupancy (AOO) and Extent of Occurrence (EOO) are very small. Constructions of infrastructure (restaurant, a bridge that connects the island and mainland, footpaths, etc.) are threats for decreasing the area and quality of habitat. Only 170 mature individuals exist, but not enough data from the past is available to assess a continuing decline.

According the EU IUCN Red List Assessment, this species is DD.

Population

Current population trend

Decreasing

Description

In North Macedonia the population size is very small. During the field trip investigation the precise data for the status of the population size of this species in the specified site was determined. The number of individuals in the population is 170, on area of 5000 m

Habitat and Ecology

System

/

Habitat and Ecology

Prefers to grow in a wide variety of soils, from loamy, sand and clay soils and can tolerate a sunny or half shady position.
At the only known locality in the North Macedonia, it develops in shaded areas, right next to the springs of the Crni Drim river, under the wide canopy of the Alnus glutinosa stems. The area where this species develops is in direct contact with park surfaces that are constantly maintained by mowing (personal data V. Matevski).

Use and trade

Use and trade

The family Apiaceae, which includes the genus Angelica, is one of the plant families with a high percentage of medicinal plants. Some species of the genus Angelica are known as a medicinal plants, but the use of the species Angelica palustris for medical purposes is not known. But its limited distribution on the territory of North Macedonia and the poor populations does not represent a special interest from that aspect.

Threats

Threats

Angelica palustris is plant species with wide distribution, but its populations are very fragmented and isolated. Because of this, the species is under threat. The populations of the plant are generally small and reduced in number, mainly due to habitat loss, and exhibit a marked reduction in biological vitality.
In North Macedonia, Angelica palustris grows in a zone of intensive tourist activities in the locality St. Naum, especially in the summer and autumn period of the year. Walking through the park where this species grows, part of its population is exposed to trampling. Constructions of infrastructure (restaurant, a bridge that connects the island and mainland, footpaths, etc.) are threats for the survival of this species in the locality.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

The location where this species develops is located within the boundaries of NP Galichica and in the shore line of the Ohrid Lake, which is part of the UNESCO list as a natural heritage.
The species should have a special protection status, given that this locality is a tourist center with great visibility especially in the summer and autumn, when the plant has an optimal vegetative and reproductive period of development. It should be taken into account in the Galicica NP Spatial Plans.

Owing to its Europe-wide conservation status, this plant has been included in the Bern Convention, and subsequently listed in Annex II of the EU Flora–Fauna Directive—Natura 2000.
