Justification

This species’ area of occupancy is very restricted (8km2). There are two locations with stable population trend.
The population is not connected with the populations in the neighbouring country.

According to Global and EU Red List Assessment, this species is LC (Least Concern)

Population

Current population trend

Description

During the field investigations of Monospitovo – Bansko Swamp, on two localities (v. Monospitovo and v. Gabrovo) about 6.500 individuals on an area of 250m2 were registered. The population trend is stable.

The following future threats are plausible: fluctuating the water level of the marsh, aridisation of climate, hydro-ameliorative activities and drainage of the wetlands.

Habitat and Ecology

System

Terrestrial|Freshwater (=Inland waters)

Habitat and Ecology

Annual species, develops on muddy, sandy places, channels, dried wetlands in the lowland parts of territory of North Macedonia. The species reproduces by seeds and populations fluctuate with the water level.

On the territory of Bulgaria occurs on drying banks of natural swamps, lakes and rivers and artificial fishfarms, dams, and river bodies. Population fluctuating in relation with the water level (Tzonev, 2015).

Use and trade

Use and trade

This species has medicinal properties (Pan et al. 2009) of clearing liver heat, cool the blood, diminish inflammation and detumescence. It can be propagated by tissue culture (Zhang et al. 2007).

There is insufficient data on the use of Lindernia procumbens in North Macedonia for medical or trade purposes.

Threats

Threats

The main threat is the fluctuating water level of the marsh. In addition, the species’ limited distribution makes it vulnerable to changes in habitat through e.g. intensive afforestation in the past period using invasive species Amorpha fruticosa at Monospitovo marsh, aridisation of climate; hydro-ameliorative activities, drainage of wetlands, infrastructural activities etc.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

This species is listed as protected by the Biological diversity Act (Official Gazette, Republic of Macedonia, No 139, 7.10. 2011), Bern Convention and Habitat Directive Annex IV b.
The locality in the Monospitovo Blato is in a protected site – natural rarity with Osmunda regalis.
