Justification

The species is very rare, and it is known from two localities situated on Ohrid side of Galicica Mt. The number of registered individuals is about 30, while the total number of mature individuals (including those that are extant but not yet recorded) is not expected to reach 250, therefore this is treated as a very small population. The population is stable and it is protected within Galicica National Park. The foetid juniper whereon the species occurs is a very rare species in the country developing solely within Galicica NP. The substrate also occurs on Prespa side of Galicica but no data are available for the presence of the fungus there. АОО is 24 км2 but it also entails other sites with foetid juniper communities, where the species is expected to occur.

Description

Lenzitopsis oxycedri is a rare species; known from two localities in the south-western part of the country – Galicica National Park. The species is known only from the area where its host is present. Until now, on both localities about 30 specimens have been observed, while the total number of mature individuals (including those that are extant but not yet recorded) is not expected to reach 250.

Habitat and Ecology

System

3 Shrubland
3.8 Shrubland – Mediterranean-type Shrubby Vegetation

Habitat and Ecology

Lenzitopsis oxycedri causes white rot in Juniperus spp.  It is apparently restricted to Juniperus and known from J. oxycedrus and J. thurifera (Spain), J. oxycedrus (Italy), J. foetidissima and J. excelsa (Turkey). In North Macedonia was collected in mixed associations of Juniperus excelsa and J.foetidissima where grows as a saprobe exclusively on J. foetidissima causing  a white rot.

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

Lenzitopsis oxycedri is associated with old growth juniper trees and reduced amount of habitat is the main cause of the inferred decline and threat. The small population size make the species very susceptible for local extinction due to random events such as fires, tourism, destruction of habitats and other human activities.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

Protection of old host trees is the key conservation action for protection of the species; study of the population number and range; interpretation of species status by means of reinforced understanding of the species biology and ecology; habitat conservation; study of the trends via monitoring.
