Justification

The species has been observed at two sites – in the mountains of Skopska Crna Gora and Vodno, with population of approximately 50 fruiting bodies. It has been found in springtime, in May, on fallen branches of deciduous trees. The number of registered individuals is about fifty but this figure is expected to be multiple times higher than the current one. The species is a saprobe, occurring in deciduous forests, and due to insufficient study of spring species, the anticipated number of sites and specimens would be manifold. Vodno site is under heavy anthropogenic pressure down to enormous attendance by visitors due to its proximity to the capital. The species is red-listed in several European countries (Croatia, Czechia, Poland).

Population

Current population trend

Stable

Description

This species has been recorded in the country only recently, observed at two sites (Vodno and Skopska Crna Gora), at an altitude of 850-1,000 m, in springtime (May). The populations each consist of over twenty individuals.

Habitat and Ecology

System

1 Forest
1.4 Forest – Temperate

Habitat and Ecology

Plectania melastoma is a saprobe, and in N. Macedonia it occurs in deciduous associations during springtime (May). In Vodno Mt, the species has been found on a dry twig of a deciduous tree, in mixed deciduous forest with black pine plantations whereas in Skopska Crna Gora Mt it has been spotted in oak woods (Querco-Carpinetum orientalis), on a fallen twig of Quercus pubescens

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

The most severe threat is logging of forest ecosystems in Skopska Crna Gora Mt. Vodno locality is often visited by tourists as it is in the vicinity of the capital Skopje, and it is one of the closest and the most accessible recreational places. Therefore, it is threatened by habitat loss/degradation caused by anthropogenic pressure i.e. tourism & recreation, along with recreational activities.

Forest fires, more common due to climate change, may pose another major threat.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

The species can be protected via prevention of forest degradation and by forest conservation. This consists of e.g. avoiding intensification of logging practices in forests and plantations as well as in the adjoining areas. Active prevention of forest succession and erosion is recommended. Designating key sites for protection is advised.a
