Justification

For the species Sparassis crispa, in our country, there is data only about a single specimen spotted in oldgrowth pine forest. Its presence is also expected on other localities with old-growth pine forest, which are rare in the country. The major threat to the species is forest logging, which is the reason why it is proposed for the category of Endangered (EN).

Population

Current population trend

Decreasing

Description

In N. Macedonia, the population size is minute. Until now, the species has been observed only at one location

Habitat and Ecology

System

1 Forest
1.4 Forest – Temperate

Habitat and Ecology

Sparassis crispa is a lignicolous species, associated with conifer trees, mainly pines, and, according to literature, it also occurs under hardwoods, especially oaks. The species fruits in autumn, growing on the roots or at the bases of tree trunks. As indicated by the current data, in our country, it is associated with pine trees

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

Minor areas with autochthonous pine forest; very small areas with old-growth pine plantations, and the small size of the species population in N. Macedonia. Habitat loss/degradation caused by logging. Forest fires, more common due to climate change, may be the other major threat.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

The species can be protected via prevention of forest degradation and by forest conservation.
This includes avoidance of intensification of logging practices in autochthonous pine forests and old-growth pine plantations as well as in the adjacent areas. Active prevention of forest succession and erosion is recommended. Designating key sites for protection is advised.
