Justification

Mitrula paludosa is a rare species with fragmented and isolated populations. It is known from two sites: one in a protected area (Mavrovo National Park), and another site in Osogovo Mts. Its habitats are threatened due to hydrological system modifications, surface water and air pollution (eutrophication), natural succession, erosion and forest management. Accordingly, the species is threatened by habitat loss and degradation. The number of individuals is estimated at approximately 200, and they have a very small Estimated Extent of Occurrence (ЕОО) of 3,593 km2 and Estimated Area of Occupancy (AOO) of 16 km2, which fully corresponds to the proposed IUCN categorisation.

Population

Current population trend

Decreasing

Description

In N. Macedonia, the population size is inconsiderable. The number of fruiting bodies in all anticipated habitats is estimated at approximately 200.

Habitat and Ecology

System

5 Wetlands (inland)
5.4 Wetlands (inland) – Bogs, Marshes, Swamps, Fens, Peatlands

Habitat and Ecology

Mitrula paludosa is saprobic species which grows on rotting leaves, twigs and mosses in bogs, swamps, damp ditches and in the shallow margins of some weed-fringed lakes. In our country, in both cases, it has been established in the vicinity of mountain streams, in puddles of standing water, at an altitude beyond 1,200 m. The fruiting bodies commonly emerge during summertime, scattered or gregarious. Mitrula paludosa is a recycler fungus, which breaks down dead plant litter.

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no confirmed use and trade of this species in N. Macedonia.

Threats

Threats

These habitats are threatened attributable to hydrological system modifications, surface water and air pollution (eutrophication), natural succession, erosion and forest management. Thus, the species is threatened by habitat loss and degradation.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

The species may be protected via conservation of its habitat and prevention of degradation of sites of actual and potential occurrence. Designating key sites for protection is recommended.
