Justification

The Dalmatian Algyroides can only be found in five to seven locations across North Macedonia. Globally this species’ range stretches along the western coast of the Balkan Peninsula and national populations are isolated from this core, making regional rescue effects impossible to these severely fragmented populations, without human intervention. This lizard can only be found on cliffs/rocky habitats close to water bodies in North Macedonia, making its populations particularly prone to changes due to global climate change, as well as human interventions (small hydro power plant construction and infrastructure development) that urge the inference of reductions in AOO, EOO and habitat quality. Finally, national populations’ extent of occurrence (EOO) and area of occupancy (AOO) add up to 3.984 km2 and 44 km2, respectively, assigning this species to the Endangered category. Globally and in Europe, this species has been assessed as Least Concern.

Description

In North Macedonia the Dalmatian Algyroides’ population size is not accurately determined. Where present seemingly rather common, but severely fragmented and present threats causing habitat degradation are exacerbating this issue and likely causing population reductions.

Habitat and Ecology

System

Terrestrial

Habitat and Ecology

Typically found close to water on well-vegetated walls and cliffs. Mating takes place in March and April and often two clutches are laid of two to eight eggs (Böhme et al. 2009; Speybroeck et al. 2016).

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no known use of or trade in this species.

Threats

Threats

Habitat destruction and degradation due to hydro-power plant construction, gravel excavation, urbanization and rising infrastructure development for tourism pose threats to this species. All threats listed for this species are included in the list of priority threats to biological diversity in the “NATIONAL Strategy for biodiversity of Republic of Macedonia” (Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning, 2018).

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

It is listed on Annex II of the Bern Convention and on Annex IV of the EU Habitats Directive. Nationally, it is not on the list of protected wild species.
