Justification

This is a ubiquitous species in North Macedonia also present in all neighbouring countries, occurring in many habitats and localities, even around man-made ones (Böhme et al. 2009; Speybroeck et al. 2016), and is therefore Least Concern. Globally and in Europe, this species has been assessed as Least Concern.

Population

Current population trend

Stable

Description

The national population size of the Balkan Green Lizard in North Macedonia has not been accurately determined, but the species’ ubiquitous presence in the country, and field experience suggest dense populations throughout and therefore can be considered as stable.

Habitat and Ecology

System

Terrestrial

Habitat and Ecology

Can be found in a wide range of habitats usually containing a lot of vegetation such as forest edges, open woods, hedgerows along roads and paths, scrub-land, overgrown fields and gardens (Böhne et al. 2009; Speybroeck et al. 2016).

Use and trade

Use and trade

There is no known use of or trade in this species.

Threats

Threats

Wildfires and the habitat shifts that follow pose threats to this species. Road mortality can be a significant threat to some populations especially in the spring and summer seasons.

Conservation actions

Conservation actions

It is listed on Annex II of the Bern Convention and on Annex IV of the EU Habitats Directive. On a national level it is on the list of protected wild species
