Justification

The species Astragalus physocalyx is registered as a single population at one loca in the territory of North Macedonia. The habitat of the species is located in a very sensitive zone, where various forestry, construction and other anthropogenic activities are undertaken.

  • A pipeline for water supply from Gjavato to Dojran Lake was built near the single population of the species. The pipeline passes very close, but luckily the population was not damaged.

  • Windmills were built on top of the Churchulum, right above the population.

  • The foot of the Churchulum locality was afforested with allochthonous species of Pinus halepensis and Cupressus sempervirens.

The wider surroundings of Bogdanci, including the Churchulum site, are vulnerable to fires.

For the number of mature individuals there are not enough data from the past to assess the continuing decline.

According to EU IUCN Red List Assessment the species is Endangered.

Habitat and Ecology

Atragalus physocalyx is a caespitose, acaulescens perennial plant, calyx vesicular-inflated in fruit, and insect pollinated. It reproduces both vegetatively and through seeds. It develops on siliceous bedrock in the southern parts of the North Macedonia, under the strong sub-Mediterranean climate influence, in the belt of the Quercus coccifera forest, at about 200-300 meters above sea level. The population develops in open areas, which represent a degrading stage of the association Querco cocciferae-Carpinetum orientalis. With the degradation of this forest community, gradually develops dry grasslands communities from the area of hilly pastures belonging

Use and trade

Use and trade

Some species of the genus Astragalus have a traditional use for the production of natural gum tragacanth, while other species are used as herbal medicines (Abtahi et al., 2015). However, we do not have data of the use of Astragalus physocalyx for medical or industrial purposes in North Macedonia.

Threats

Threats
